To Prevent Heart Disease, Clean your Teeth

We now know that oral health is connected with diabetes, and prematurely born low-birthweight babies, and the latest discovery is that periodontal disease, or gum disease, is connected with heart disease.

Barbara Taylor: It could be that the bacteria that are in dental plaque and which cause periodontitis, actually release molecules, chemicals, that trigger off reactions in the body or those products could themselves enter the bloodstream, and damage the endothelium, which is the lining inside the blood vessels that become diseased in cardiovascular disease. It could be that the process of inflammation in the body produces different cells and molecules and that those cells and molecules somehow trigger off further damage to the endothelium inside the blood vessels.
